from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hamburg Aviation Association e. V. (HVL) is one of the oldest air sports clubs in Germany. It was founded in 1908 by Hamburg's mayor Johann Georg Mönckeberg and other Hamburg personalities such as Edmund Siemers and is still active and successful in aviation today.

It all started in 1908 with free balloon flights , after the Second World War the HVL was the first civilian user of Fuhlsbüttel Airport in Hamburg and only operated glider flights until it became a commercial airport in 1952. As a result, the HVL was given the new glider airfield in the Boberger dunes in the south-east of Hamburg. Today the site lies in the middle of the Boberger Niederung nature reserve .

With 180 members, the HVL is one of the largest glider clubs in Germany and in the world.
