The Boberg glider airfield is a glider airfield in the Boberger Niederung in the east of Hamburg and is home to the Hamburg Aviation Association and the Hamburg Aero Club Boberg . The glider airfield is located about 10 km east of Hamburg city center in the nature reserve below the Geesthang , not far from Lake Boberger See .

history

Hamburg Aviation Association

The association was founded in 1908 as " Hamburger Verein für Luftschifffahrt" , later renamed " Hamburger Verein für Luftschifffahrt " (HVL). Until about 1965 there were the branches of powered flight, glider flight, model flight and balloon flight, today the association mainly operates glider flight in different variants. The HVL is a recognized instructor for gliders, touring motor gliders and ultra-light gliders. The HVL has over 120 members and 13 club-owned aircraft.

Hamburg Aero Club Boberg

The Hamburg Aero Club Boberg was founded in Boberg in 1953 and with around 270 members, 15 club-owned (12 gliders, 2 motor gliders and a tow plane) and 28 private gliders as well as the HVL is one of the largest glider clubs in Germany.

Place data

The place is approved for gliders , self- launching motor gliders and aircraft that are intended to be used for towing gliders or motor gliders. The space is not approved for non-space motor-powered aircraft.

In 2003, a fatal aircraft accident occurred on the site. Two other accidents in 2011 and 2016 were less severe. Here it remained with high property damage and a broken leg.

On September 19, 2019, a glider pilot was killed after a crash from previously unexplained circumstances.
