Hamelin de Ballon or Balun († 1089 ) was a Norman nobleman. Towards the end of the 11th century he conquered the Abergavenny region in south-east Wales.

Life

Hamelin probably came from the northern French village of Ballon . Together with his brothers Wynoc and Wynebald, he came to England in 1066 in the wake of William the Conqueror . and received the rule of Much Marcle in Herefordshire . Under King Wilhelm Rufus he conquered the upper Gwent and built Abergavenny Castle to protect his conquests and as the center of his new rule . In 1087 he founded the Benedictine Priory St Mary, the church of which is today's parish church of St Mary in Abergavenny.

Since Hamelin left no male offspring, Abergavenny fell to his nephew Brian FitzCount after his death . His daughter Emmelind inherited the rule Much Marcle and married Reginald de Breteuil, a son of Roger de Breteuil, 2nd Earl of Hereford , who took the name de Balun. An illegitimate daughter of Hamelin married Dyfnwal, the Welsh prince of Upper Gwent, her son was the prince Seisyll ap Dyfnwal .
