Hamid Sulaiman (born June 20, 1986 in Damascus ) is a Syrian painter and comic book writer.

life and work

In 2005, Sulaiman studied architecture and art at Damascus State University . In 2010 he completed his studies with a diploma. After graduating, he worked as a graphic artist in Syria. He was inspired by artists such as Joe Sacco , Will Eisner and Frank Miller, among others .

When the civil war in Syria broke out in 2011, he was imprisoned several times for short periods and then fled via Jordan to Egypt and from there to Germany and France. Over the next four years he created the 288-page black and white graphic novel Freedom Hospital , which made him famous around the world. It tells the fictional story of the Syrian peace activist and pacifist Yasmin, who opens an underground field hospital that is intended for all people in society, from oppositionists, journalists, Kurds, Alawis to wounded rebels. With the comic novel, Sulaiman wanted to bring the history of the Syrian revolution closer to a European audience in the right order. His works have been exhibited in various art galleries in Berlin, Paris, Cairo, London and Venice, among others.

Sulaiman lives in Paris.
