Hammundese oak from the north

The Hammundeseiche is a natural monument , which is located about three kilometers northeast of Friedewald in the district of Hersfeld-Rotenburg in the Seulingswald in Hesse and about 650 meters south of the Friedewald road to Hönebach and the parallel federal motorway 4 . The oak stands in the middle of the former hamlet of Hammundeseiche at 435 meters above sea level . The oak represents the former center of the hamlet of Hammundeseiche, which has been abandoned since 1312. The reconstructed village fountain and a small pond are right next to the oak.

The chest height is 8.65 m (2015). The oak is one of the strongest in Hessen. The height of the oak is 25 meters and the crown diameter is 20 meters. Hammundese oak from the south

The age of the oak is given in the latest literature as 350 to 440 years. Another source gives 1000 years, which seems too high. It is often reported that the name is derived from the deserted town. Accordingly, the oak should be over 1000 years old. Around 1905, however, it was still called the oak at the Nadelöhr (see also: Nadelöhr in the Friedewald district ), which is located 650 meters north on the country road. It was only in the last century that the name Hammundeseiche came up for the oak. The former town was completely forgotten for a long time. It was not until 1969 that their remains were discovered during excavations.
