The mound of Hampstead Norris Castle

Hampstead Norris Castle is an Outbound castle in the village Hampstead Norreys in the English county of Berkshire .

history

Hampstead Norris Castle was a Norman moth over the village of Hampstead Norreys. The mound is 25 meters wide and 4.2 meters high. It is made of chalk . The contour of the top of the mound suggests that a wooden tower or other defensive structure once stood on it. Originally the complex was thought to be an old barrow , until later investigations showed that it was a Norman structure. The local historian David Ford thinks that the castle was built for Theodoric the goldsmith after the Norman conquest of England .

Today the castle site is surrounded by light forest and is considered a Scheduled Monument .
