Han Trainer Pro is a Chinese vocabulary trainer. In addition to visual memory aids, which are largely based on the principles of mnemonics and take into account the visual nature of the Chinese language , related words and individual radicals are also explained. This is intended to promote understanding of the inner workings of the respective characters or the respective vocabulary.

Free version

There is a free version for Windows, MAC and Linux that offers fewer vocabulary than the full version and otherwise has no functional or time restrictions. The "Han Trainer Screensaver", which is based on the vocabulary trainer and explains vocabulary, shows the spelling and also outputs it acoustically, is also available free of charge.

The free versions may include a. Vocabulary from the subject areas of Chinese zodiac signs , numbers and mathematics, as well as the first lessons from the Chinese standard textbook Practical Chinese Reader (German title: Basic studies in Chinese , published by Bildungsverlag EINS ).

Paid version

There are different paid editions, each with a different vocabulary. The number of included vocabulary and lessons is significantly higher than with the free products.

  • Theme Edition with thematically structured vocabulary
  • Practical Chinese Reader Edition with vocabulary based on a textbook
  • HSK Edition to prepare for the standardized Chinese test HSK (Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì)
  • Top1000 Edition with the 1000 most frequently used vocabulary

The number of vocabulary per product is around 1200, with a small amount of overlap between the vocabulary. Numerous vocabulary contain references to other (related) words that are also conveyed.

Special editions

  • The TCM Edition conveys the traditional characters, pronunciation, medical meaning and location of all 361 acupuncture points of Traditional Chinese Medicine .

The special editions are only suitable for those interested or practitioners of the respective subject; they are not suitable for learning the Chinese language.

Learning variants and functions

Various query modes and learning programs as well as a repetition assistant are available for learning the vocabulary, depending on the learning objective:

Query / learning modes

  • TV mode - shows in random order all vocabulary of a lesson including pronunciation, pinyin, stroke order, 2 hints or visual memory aids and finally the translation. The translation is displayed with a time delay in order to motivate the learner to think about the meaning of the displayed character using the gradually appearing notes, which promotes the learning effect.
  • Character German - only shows the character whose German meaning is being sought. Corresponds to the situation of reading a sign or a menu in China.
  • Multiple choice (actually: single choice): The character that fits the displayed German term or the played pronunciation can be selected from several options.
  • Chinese-German - specifies both the character and the pronunciation of a Chinese word for which the German translation is sought.
  • Phonetic transcription Pinyin - queries the Pinyin phonetic transcription for a character or a German term. This corresponds to the situation of entering Chinese characters into the computer. Tones can also be entered.
  • Listening Comprehension - tests the learner's ability to understand spoken Chinese words. As in real conversation, he sees neither the characters nor the phonetic transcription.

Tutorials

  • More like pronunciation - Mixes the queries so that learning the pronunciation and pinyin phonetic transcription is in the foreground. Knowledge of the characters is helpful but not required.
  • Rather the characters - mixes the queries so that learning the characters is a priority. Knowledge of pronunciation or pinyin phonetic transcription is helpful but not required.
  • All - uses all available query modes

Repeat assistant

The repetition assistant maps Sebastian Leitner's learning card system . It becomes visible at the earliest 1 day after successfully learning the first vocabulary. As soon as it is classified as "learned" after being correctly answered, every word is automatically given a time stamp and after one day it is moved as a (virtual) learning card into a vocabulary card box. Together with all the other vocabulary that has accumulated there, the word here waits for its first repetition. If the word has been repeated once, it will be put in the card index for the second repetition one week later.

If this has also been carried out successfully, the vocabulary will go into the vocabulary box for the third repetition after another four weeks.

After completing this training program, according to the general knowledge of cognitive psychology , the word remains in the learner's memory for a very long time (usually forever).

More functions

The list of vocabulary can be printed out and sorted so that the words that have caused the learner the greatest difficulty are at the top. For this purpose, the program internally creates an individual learning protocol for each user, in which learning time and learning progress are recorded for each individual word. The individual learning profile created in this way and continuously updated is also used in the repetition assistant when determining the optimal time for word repetitions.

Incorrect answers by the learner are analyzed and mix-ups are automatically recognized and included in the future query of the vocabulary.

The program automatically adapts its level of difficulty to the user's learning progress by recognizing on the basis of the quality of the inputs if the user is overwhelmed with too many new vocabulary.

criticism

Due to the Flash technology used and the fact that every word is a multimedia learning object, it is not possible to enter your own vocabulary. However, all of the existing vocabulary can be combined to individual lessons.

As a vocabulary trainer, Han Trainer Pro does not replace a Chinese language course and is therefore not suitable for learning the language from scratch. The product is a supplement to existing Chinese courses.

Awards

The software was already recognized in the prototype stage at the Learntec trade fair in 2004 as a finalist in the “Multimedia Transfer” competition for outstanding multimedia products.
