Samantha Cristoforetti (born April 26, 1977 in Milan ) is an Italian fighter pilot and astronaut .

Life

Education

Cristoforetti studied as part of the Erasmus exchange program at the Technical University of Munich , the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de l'Aéronautique et de l'Espace in Toulouse and the Chemical-Technical Dmitri Mendeleev University of Russia in Moscow Engineering Sciences , which she in 2001 completed. In 2005, she completed a master's in aerospace and aerospace engineering at the University of Naples .

Cristoforetti joined the Italian Air Force in 2001 and studied at the Accademia Aeronautica , which she graduated in 2005. She then trained as a fighter pilot at Sheppard Air Force Base . After graduating, she served from 2006 with the 51º Stormo Ferruccio Serafini squadron in Istrana and from 2008 with the 32º Stormo "Armando Boetto" in Amendola .

Space travel

Cristoforetti prevailed against more than 8,400 other applicants in the ESA selection process and was presented to the public on May 20, 2009 in Paris , as the only woman among six new astronauts in the European Astronaut Corps.

On July 3, 2012, ESA announced that Cristoforetti was starting a long-term stay on the ISS in 2014 . She flew to the International Space Station on November 23, 2014 with the Soyuz TMA-15M spacecraft and became a member of ISS expeditions 42 and 43 . On June 7, 2015, on her 195th mission day, she replaced the American Sunita Williams as the record holder for long-term flights by women in space. The landing took place on June 11, 2015.

On March 6, 2013, she was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic . In September 2019 she published the book The Long Journey. An astronaut's diary .

Private

Cristoforetti's hobbies include mountaineering , diving , the Chinese language and caving . She speaks Italian (mother tongue), English, German, French and Russian.

In November 2016 she gave birth to a girl in Cologne . Your partner is a French astronaut trainer.

Like many astronauts, Samantha Cristoforetti is a radio amateur ; her amateur radio call sign is IZ0UDF.
