Hannah Woolley

Hannah Woolley (* 1621 ; † probably 1675 or earlier) was the first English cookbook author whose works were printed. Her books also deal with general housekeeping .

Her work includes The Cooks Guide (1664), The Ladies Directory (1661 and 1662), The Queen-Like Closet (1670, 1672, 1675–1676, 1681, 1684), which was also translated into German as a woman's pastime , and The Gentlewoman's Companion: or, A Guide to the Female Sex .

From 1639 to 1646 she worked as a servant in a noble household, where she also acquired medical knowledge. In 1646 she married Benjamin Woolley, the schoolmaster of Newport , Essex Grammar School , and taught at his school. In her second marriage she married Francis Challinor. In 1661 she returned to the domestic service and found recognition for her medical knowledge.
