Haid came from athletics to basketball at the age of 16 and went to the NCAA in 1984 with a scholarship to the University of New Orleans , for which he played in the 1984/85 season. He was used in 29 games and scored an average of 6.5 points. From 1989 to 1991 he played again in the United States, this time at Hawaii Pacific University in the NAIA . In his two years he blocked a total of 233 throws, more than any "HPU" player before him. He also received "All America" awards in both years and was named Player of the Year in District 29 in both seasons. His good performances aroused the interest of the NBA club Detroit Pistons , which invited him to training camp in the summer of 1991. However, Haid missed the jump into the Pistons roster. At the time he was 27 years old, the Pistons told him that he was already too old.

Haid completed over 100 international matches in the course of his career. After his competitive sports career, he worked in his family's business (production of illuminated advertising) and later became a board member of Hypo Tirol Bank Italia , then Hypo Tirol Bank .
