Ha Lò prison
The Hỏa Lò prison ( Vietnamese Hỏa Lò , 'glowing furnace') was a prison for political prisoners in Hanoi , Vietnam . Based on the Hilton Hotels , the ironic American prisoner of war name for the establishment was Hanoi Hilton .
The prison was built in 1904 by the French to imprison and torture Vietnamese resistance fighters. During the Vietnam War , the building served the North Vietnamese as a prison for American prisoners of war.
The name became a household name through the film Hanoi Hilton .
