Hans-Eberhard Piepho

Hans-Eberhard Piepho (born February 15, 1929 in Hanover ; † September 11, 2004 there ) was professor of didactics in English language and literature at the University of Giessen from 1973 to 2004.

Life

After graduating from high school, Hans-Eberhard Piepho studied in Hanover and the USA from 1949 to 1953 and then worked as a teacher at the differentiated middle school (comprehensive school) in Hanover. From 1958 to 1961 he was an assistant at the University of Hanover , from 1961 to 1973 headmaster, from 1973 to 2004 professor at the Institute for English Studies at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen.

Hans-Eberhard Piepho initiated the communicative turnaround in Germany with his book " Communicative Competence as a Superordinate Learning Objective in English Lessons " (1974) and decisively shaped foreign language teaching in the second half of the 20th century. As a professor, author of numerous textbooks, publisher of specialist magazines and handbooks and as teacher trainer, Piepho achieved an extraordinary broad impact both in Germany and in an international context.

Hans Eberhard Piepho Prize

In memory of Piepho, the Hans Eberhard Piepho Prize is awarded every two years for ideas in communicative foreign language teaching.
