Hans-Georg Mey

Hans-Georg Mey (born December 12, 1924 in Insterburg ) is a German prison psychologist and criminologist .

Life

Mey grew up as the son of a village school teacher in Szarken, East Prussia, today Russia ( Kaliningrad Oblast ). He returned from missions at the front in World War II with a severe head injury and tuberculosis disease. It was only after lengthy treatment that he was able to begin studying psychology at the Braunschweig Technical University in 1947, which he graduated as a psychologist in 1952. He then did his doctorate with Elisabeth Müller-Luckmann .

After completing his studies, he got a job as an institutional psychologist at the Vechta prison (Lower Saxony). In 1958 he moved to the Herford Juvenile Penitentiary (North Rhine-Westphalia), where he was primarily responsible for the admission procedure. In 1977 Mey was appointed head of the department for psychology at the Westphalian-Lippe prison in Hamm, which has since been dissolved; Here he was responsible for the selection and recruitment of psychologists, as well as the technical supervision of these and of the Gelsenkirchen Social Therapy Institute. Until his retirement at the end of 1989, he headed the Criminological Service working group , from which today's Criminological Service of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia developed. He was also a member of the Juvenile Prison Commission, the final report of which was presented in 1980. Mey has emerged scientifically through empirical studies on the recidivism of offenders as well as through contributions to crime prognosis and through his collaboration on a commentary on the penal law .
