Hans-Jörg Neuschäfer (born December 29, 1933 in Worms ) is a German literary scholar and Romance studies .

Career

In 1953 Hans-Jörg Neuschäfer passed the Abitur at the Altsprachliches Gymnasium in Worms. He studied Romance languages, German and philosophy at the Universities of Heidelberg, Grenoble and Madrid (Complutense). He passed the state examination in 1958; completed his doctorate in Heidelberg in 1960; In 1966 he completed his habilitation in Giessen, where he was assistant at Hans-Robert Jauss' chair. In the same year he was appointed to a professorship for Romance philology and literary studies at the Saarland University in Saarbrücken, to which he still belongs to this day, despite several other appointments, since 1999 as emeritus.

Research priorities and tasks

His main research interests are Italian Renaissance literature; French literature of the 17th and 19th centuries, Spanish literature from the Middle Ages to the present day and the history of Spanish cinema. Neuschäfer was an elected expert reviewer for the German Research Foundation for eight years . From 1979 to 1981 he was chairman of the German Romanists Association; from 1989 to 1993 chairman of the German Hispanic Association.

Awards

In 1993 he received the Augsburg University Prize for Spanish and Latin American Studies . In 1994 he was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Spanish Civil Order; 2000 with the Grand Commander's Cross of the same order. In 1997 he received the Alexander von Humboldt - José Celestino Mutis Prize for scientific collaboration with Spain. In 2004, the Real Academia Española elected him to its 40-person committee of foreign corresponding members ( miembros correspondientes extranjeros ).
