Hans-Jürgen Sinell (born December 7, 1926 in Berlin ) is a German veterinarian and professor of food hygiene . He has made a significant contribution to the development of national and international standards that serve to control microbiological risks in food.

Life

Hans-Jürgen Sinell grew up in Berlin-Zehlendorf. He began studying veterinary medicine at the Humboldt University in Berlin and later belonged to the first class of students at the Free University of Berlin . There he received his doctorate in 1954 on the subject of equine diseases. In 1960 he completed his habilitation on the subject of biological detection of heat-denatured muscle proteins. In 1961 he became a full professor at the Free University of Berlin and, as successor to Martin Lerche, was director of the Institute for Food Hygiene until 1995.

From 1972 to 1992 he was a member of the International Commission on Microbiological Specifications for Foods (ICMSF), which develops international standards for controlling microbiological risks in food. From 1972 he headed the scientific advisory board of the Federal Institute for Meat Research . In 1984 he was appointed head of the scientific advisory board of the Federal Nutrition Agency . Until 1998, Hans-Jürgen Sinell was a member of the presidium of the German Food Book Commission . There he headed the specialist committees for fish and fish products and the specialist committee for delicatessen products.

Honors

In 2004 the Heinrich Stockmeyer Foundation created the "Hans Jürgen Sinell Medal". This award honors personalities who have made an outstanding contribution to the goals of the foundation in terms of consumer protection, food safety and food quality.
