Hans-Joachim Schemel

Hans-Joachim Schemel (born January 22, 1945 in Haynau , Silesia ) is a German landscape ecologist and urban planner .

Life

Schemel was a political advisor on environmental issues from 1975 to 2015. After studying landscape ecology and postgraduate urban planning at the Technical University of Munich , he carried out research at the Munich Alpine Institute from 1975 to 1983. After receiving his doctorate in 1985 on environmental impact assessment (EIA) as an instrument for preparing environmental policy decisions, he founded the “Office for Environmental Research and Urban Development ” in Munich. Until 2015 he advised governments at federal and state level as well as municipalities, associations, initiatives and foundations on a scientific basis.

Schemel developed the concept of the area categoryNature Experience Area” , which was anchored in the Federal Nature Conservation Act and has meanwhile been implemented in numerous cities. Since 2000 he has been the spokesman for the nationwide "Urban Nature Experience Working Group". From 1993 to 2015 he was a publicly appointed and sworn expert for environmental impact assessments and intervention regulations. For many years he was a member of the “Sport and Environment” advisory board at the Federal Environment Minister . The results of his research on environmentally relevant issues and decisions have found their way into specialist journals and specialist books.
