Hans-Joachim Wenzel (* February 24, 1938 ; † April 22, 2020 ) was a German social geographer and professor i. R. for social geography in the department of culture and geoscientists at the University of Osnabrück and migration expert.

Life

Scientific career

He completed his studies in geography, soil science, geology, social economy in developing countries and economics at the universities of Hamburg, Freiburg i.Br., Göttingen and Gießen in 1966 with a degree in geography. Hans-Joachim Wenzel then worked as a research assistant at the University of Giessen, received his doctorate in 1969 and subsequently worked there as a lecturer. In 1975 he accepted a professorship for social geography at the University of Osnabrück. There he was u. a. active as a member of the Senate and the Council. Between 1997 and 2002 he succeeded Prof. Dr. Klaus J. Bade is the director of the Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies (IMIS) at the University of Osnabrück.

Research and projects

His main focus was on rural development in industrialized and developing countries, regional education and labor market research, and geographic migration research . In his research work, Hans-Joachim Wenzel concentrated spatially a. a. to southern Africa (Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Malawi etc.).
