Gatien de Courtilz de Sandras [ ɡatjˈɛ̃ də kuːrˈtil də sɑ̃ˈdʁɑ ] (* 1644 in Montargis ; † May 8, 1712 in Paris ) was a French musketeer and writer . He was best known for his biography d'Artagnans , which later served Alexandre Dumas the Elder as a template for his adventure novel The Three Musketeers .

At the age of 26, Courtilz embarked on a military career , which he ended in 1688 as Capitaine ( captain ) in the Régiment de Champagne . He then went to the Netherlands and published numerous documents , mostly historical novels and pamphlets . During this time Courtilz was imprisoned several times for his publications , most recently he spent nine years in the Bastille from 1702 .

Courtilz obtained a lot of information about d'Artagnan during a stay in the Bastille, which at that time was administered by Besmaux, a former companion of the legendary musketeer. He has written multiple foreign biographies in the first person , such as the Marquis de Montbrun or de Monsieur Rochefort, for which he was severely criticized.
