Hans Benedikt Gottschalk

Hans Benedikt Gottschalk (* 1930 ; † April 4, 2004 ) was a German-British classical philologist and historian of philosophy .

Life

Gottschalk came to England from Germany, where he was born, in 1938. After attending school, he studied classical philology at the Peterhouse of the University of Cambridge and graduated in 1952. In 1957, he was with a work of criticism and development of the philosophy of Aristotle in the early Peripatos for Ph.D. PhD . Various grants made it possible for him to study for a doctorate. After a brief stint at the Uppington School, Gottschalk was made assistant lecturer in January 1958, and lecturer the following year. In 1981 he was promoted to Senior Lecturer and in 1982 to Reader in classics. Gottschalk retired in September 1996. Gottschalk was a Council member of the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies and a member of the Northern Association for Ancient Philosophy . He was honored with a conference on Herakleides Ponticos in 2003 .

Research priorities

Gottschalk researched mainly in the field of post-Aristotelian philosophy, especially the Peripatos. Among the philosophers to whom he devoted himself were Theophrast , his successor in the direction of Lykeion , Straton von Lampsakos , and Herakleides Pontikos.
