Hans Engel (composer)

Hans Engel (* 1954 in Berlin ) is a German music editor and composer for film music .

biography

After graduating from high school in 1972, Engel traveled through Europe, North Africa and the USA (including tours as a solo guitarist in rock and pop bands), played street music in Paris , and finally studied guitar at the Cologne University of Music and was also a guitar teacher during this time active.

In 1986 Hans Engel published his doctoral thesis The position of the musician in the Arab-Islamic world . In the same year, Engel started at WDR in Cologne , initially as an editor for music programs on several radio waves, since 1994 at WDR television in Düsseldorf and since 1998 as an online editor also at WDR. Since 1989 he has been writing film music for more than 60 television and cinema films.

Between 1996 and 1998 Hans Engel worked in Los Angeles . He worked as a sound designer and a film music composer and returned to Cologne in 1998.

In 2003, Hans Engel won the RIAS New Media Award as project manager with a WDR.de special on the anniversary of September 11th. Since 2010, Hans Engel has been an honorary member of the jury at Civis - Europe's media prize for integration .

In The Position of the Musician in the Arab-Islamic Area , Engel examines the legal position of musicians in the Islamic culture and describes their situation. Accordingly, music and musicians were and are on the one hand “damned” , but still music was always made. For example, at the court of the supreme ruler of all believers, at the court of the caliphs in Baghdad , there were hordes of singers and instrumentalists who not only received princely salaries, but were also rewarded with “fairytale” sums of money and gold as well as valuable gifts were. Meanwhile , Muslim ultras “raged on the streets of the capital of the Islamic empire against immorality, they beat the singers and broke the musicians' instruments.
