Hans Frömmel (born December 17, 1919 - November 20, 2001 ) was a German football player and the first honorary captain of Bayer 04 Leverkusen . As captain, he led the team in 1951 to promotion to the Oberliga West, the top German division at the time.

Career

Hans Frömmel emerged from the youth team at Bayer 04 Leverkusen and, together with Richard Job, shaped the face of the then second-rate Werkself in the 1940s. Frömmel was considered a "very team-friendly player who, with his level-headedness, was the haven of calm in midfield of the Bayer team for many years."

At the end of the 1940s, Frommel's team failed to advance to the top class, with the Werkself losing the promotion games against 1. FC Köln , which had been newly founded a year earlier , and later failed at FC Schalke 04 in the second attempt . In the 1950/51 season, Bayer 04 Leverkusen were promoted to the Oberliga West. On matchday 10, the Bayer-Elf took over the table lead in the 2nd Oberliga West for the first time after a 2-0 win in the Stadion am Stadtpark against TuRu Düsseldorf, which they did not give up until the end of the season. On April 8, 1951, Fortuna Cologne was defeated 5-2 in the home stadium at Stadtpark and the ascent was made perfect. After the end of the game, the pitch was stormed before the club's chairman, Dr. Fritz Jacobi honored the team with a large golden wreath which he presented to captain Hans Frömmel. Frommel was then carried off the pitch by his teammates on their shoulders.

In the first season in the Oberliga, the Werkself did not lose any defeat in the Oberliga until the away game at FC Schalke 04 on matchday 12 and ended the season in 6th place. For many years Frömmel was no longer available as a leading player for the Werkself in the first division. In 1953 he had to end his career early due to a knee injury (examination finding: "Foreign body in the knee"). A local newspaper wrote on the occasion of the end of his career: “One of the fairest players has said goodbye to active sport. Let's hope that he will be available as a role model for the club and the youth for many years to come. "
