Hans Gericke
Hans Gericke (born December 8, 1871 in Potsdam , † October 20, 1912 near Gröditz ) was an engineer and aeronaut.
Gericke studied at the Technical University in Darmstadt and was a member of the Corps Hassia there . As an engineer, he was employed by the Schuckert Works , the Royal Railway Directorate in Berlin and later at large facilities in Canada and Denver.
From 1908 he was involved in airship sports and in August 1909 became a balloon pilot. His double crossing of the English Channel from Essen via Ostend to southern England (1910) caused a sensation. In October 1910 he and his assistant Samuel F. Perkins set a record of 40 hours in the Düsseldorf II balloon . In 1911 he won the Gordon Bennett Cup together with Otto Duncker from Wilmersdorf . When trying to set a height record together with Wilhelm Dieudonné Stieler (1888-1912) in the Ballon Reichsflugverein , they crashed in 1912 on a field near the village of Gröditz .
