Hans Harksen

Hans Harksen (born January 17, 1897 in Dessau ; † December 20, 1985 ibid) was for many years director of the Dessau City Archives and founder of the Dessau calendar .

Life

Hans Harksen was the son of the Oberregierungsrat Wilhelm Harksen (1858–1945), who was in charge of surveying the Anhalt Harz Mountains. Harksen attended secondary school in Harzgerode and the Carolinum Bernburg high school , where he passed the Abitur at Easter 1916. He then studied natural sciences and philosophy in Berlin in the summer semester of 1916, and German studies, history and philosophy in Berlin, Jena, Leipzig and Halle from the winter semester 1916/17 to the winter semester 1920/21, with a war-related break of two semesters. After he had already lectured in economics a. a. had heard from Wilhelm Stieda , he finally started studying economics in Halle in the summer semester of 1921. After receiving his doctorate in 1927, he was employed by the municipal authorities in Dessau in the finance department.

Hans Harksen was open to new ideas and soon after the Bauhaus moved to Dessau, he joined the “Circle of Friends of the Bauhaus”. On July 12, 1933, he was released from the magistrate, which was justified with his commitment to the Bauhaus. After unemployment and working in various companies in Dessau and Berlin, Harksen returned to Dessau with his family in 1945. In November 1945 he joined the budget department of the Dessau City Council. In 1951 he came to the city archives, to which he remained an employee until 1979. From 1951 to 1972 he was its director.

In 1957, Harksen founded the Dessau Calendar , which is based on the tradition of the Anhalt Calendar and publishes a variety of articles on the history of Dessau and Anhalt, and has accompanied the reconstruction of the city of Dessau from the start.
