Hans Loertscher

Hans Lörtscher (born August 1, 1909 in Spiez ; † 1990 ) was a Swiss professor of animal breeding at ETH Zurich and a pioneer in population genetics and artificial insemination in cattle breeding in Switzerland.

Live and act

Lörtscher studied agricultural sciences at the ETH Zurich and after studying in London, Edinburgh and Berlin in 1937 he received his doctorate with the dissertation: Variation-statistical studies on performance surveys in a British-Friesian herd for Dr. agr. Afterwards he was head of the Swiss herd book for Simmental cattle until he was appointed professor for animal breeding at the ETH Zurich in 1947. Together with his student Henri L. Le Roy , he was a pioneer in population genetics and artificial insemination in cattle in Switzerland. In 1976 Lötscher retired.

Hans Lörtscher was married to the agricultural scientist Margit Lörtscher-Ullmann.
