Swissgenetic

The Swissgenetics Cooperative based in Zollikofen is the largest Swiss producer and marketer of cattle semen for artificial insemination . In addition to supplying Swiss cattle farmers, the company also exports seed cans and embryos .

history

In 1960 the Swiss Association for Artificial Insemination (SVKB) was founded by the Swiss Working Group for Artificial Insemination (SAKB, today ISB, Interest Group for Swiss Insemination Breeders). In 1963 the first Swiss insemination center was opened in Neuchâtel . This was followed by the stations Mülligen AG (1964), Ins BE (1967), Bütschwil (1970) and the rearing station in Langnau near Reiden (1974). In 2007 the company moved into the newly built headquarters in Zollikofen. A livestock revolution was achieved in 1966 with the introduction of the seed freezing process. Swissgenetics played a decisive role in the introduction of the new process technology and in quality assurance in its application. After the last renewal of the artificial insemination license (AI) took place in 1990, the SVKB's AI monopoly in Switzerland was lifted in 1995. In 2000, Swissgenetics took sole responsibility for genetics procurement. In 2004 the export business was integrated into the SVKB and at the same time the Swissgenetics cooperative was founded, into which the SVKB was merged. In 2005 the authorization requirement for KB organizations was lifted and the KB market was completely liberalized. In 2009 the export volume doubled the imports. Every third domestic seed can was exported. The Swissgenetics bull SAVARD is the most widely used Swiss Red Holstein bull in the world. In 2010 Swissgenetics celebrated its 50th birthday. In addition to almost 100 offspring, three young cow champions were chosen. In 2015, the first sexed semen cans from our own separation laboratory in Mülligen could be marketed. This was followed by a new rearing station in Langnau near Reiden, which was put into operation at the end of 2015. In 2019/20 the production site in Mülligen was also renewed. The proportion of sexed semen has increased rapidly in recent years .

criticism

In 2008, the Swiss breeders of Simmental cattle for meat use complained about the lack of willingness to cooperate in the provision of sires by the quasi-monopoly Swissgenetics.

Not everyone agrees that “no extreme performance, but healthy animals” is named as the most important goal for breeding.
