Hans Peter Nilles , also Hans-Peter, (born October 2, 1950 in Konz ) is a German theoretical particle physicist .

Hans Peter Nilles studied physics at the University of Bonn , where he graduated with a diploma in 1975, a doctorate in 1978 and a habilitation in 1985. He was a post-doctoral student at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) from 1979 to 1981 and at CERN from 1981 to 1983 . In 1983 he became a Chargé de Recherche at the University of Geneva and in 1985 an employee of CERN. In 1988 he became professor for theoretical physics at the Technical University of Munich and was associated with the Max Planck Institute for Physics in Munich. Since 1997 he has been a professor at the University of Bonn. There he is the founder and director of the Bethe Center for Theoretical Physics (BCTP).

In 1992 he was a visiting scientist at SLAC and in 1996/97 and 2005 at CERN.

He deals with physics beyond the standard model ( supersymmetry , string theory , GUTs , supergravity ) and with particle astrophysics and cosmology (dark matter, dark energy, inflation), in particular with the phenomenology of string theory and modeling based on it.

His review article on supersymmetry and supergravity from 1984 is one of the most cited papers in theoretical particle physics.
