Hans Reimarus

Hans Reimarus (born April 2, 1843 in Berlin , † June 19, 1902 in Lucerne , Switzerland ) was a German bookseller in Berlin.

Life

The father Carl Reimarus (1812 / 13–1849) was the owner of the Gropius book and art shop in Berlin. After his early death, the mother and the boy moved to Bromberg , where he graduated from secondary school in 1862. Then Reimarus went to the bookseller Eduard Weber in Bonn as an apprentice. In 1865 he became an assistant in Prague , but had to leave the city the following year because of the Austro-Prussian War . He then worked for the booksellers Georg & Co in Geneva and Asher & Co in Berlin. In 1871 he had to go to war against France as a soldier .

On January 1, 1872, Hans Reimarus became a partner in the Nicolaische Buchhandlung in Berlin with his uncle Fritz Borstell . He had built the largest and most important lending library in Germany there. Reimarus was mainly responsible for the bookstore area. After Borstell's death in 1896, he became sole director. On January 1, 1901, Reinhold Borstell became a co-owner.

Hans Reimarus was a board member of the corporation of Berlin booksellers and chairman of the assortment association. In 1884 he founded the Berlin assortment with Rudolf Ludwig Prager and became its chairman.

The Nicolaische Buchhandlung Borstell & Reimarus bears his name to this day.
