Hans Reiser (2005)

Hans Thomas Reiser (born December 19, 1963 ) is an American computer scientist . He is mainly known for the ReiserFS file system named after him , which he developed with his colleagues as the owner of the Namesys company. He was convicted of the murder of his wife.

Life

Reiser grew up in California . He dropped out of school at the age of 14 and applied to the University of California, Berkeley . There he did a bachelor's degree in systematizing . In his thesis he dealt with “ differences in the philosophy of computer science and the physical sciences as illustrated by name space (file system) design issues ”.

Hans Reiser has been familiar with the Unix operating system and its offshoots since 1988 . In the period up to 1993 he worked with computers of different architectures. Building on the experience he had gained, he founded his own company Namesys in the late 1990s. Since then, Hans Reiser and a small team of programmers have developed the ReiserFS file system and its successor Reiser4 , which he makes available to the Linux community. ReiserFS was used as the standard file system for SuSE Linux for some time .

On September 3, 2006, his wife Nina, who had been separated from him since May 2004 and with whom he has two children, disappeared. Hans Reiser was arrested on October 10, 2006 on suspicion of murder, but denied any guilt. The police found in the car of Hans Reiser, from the passenger seat had been removed, including a role of large garbage bags, a bloodstained sleeping bag and two books with the titles Homicide ( the murder ) and Masterpieces of Murder ( murder, the masterpieces ). In December 2006 he announced in an interview that he wanted to sell his company Namesys to finance his defense. The trial began on November 6, 2007.

On April 28, 2008, Hans Reiser was found guilty of the murder of his wife ("first degree murder"). As part of a deal with law enforcement, he led the police to his wife's body on July 7, 2008 and confessed to the murder. Therefore, on August 29, 2008, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for second degree murder (see also homicides ), from which he can be released after 15 years at the earliest ("15 years to life"). The convict asked the society and his wife's mother for forgiveness. He was admitted to San Quentin State Prison on September 5, 2008 and transferred to Mule Creek State Prison in January 2009 . Another transfer took place in February 2011 to the Pleasant Valley State Prison . He is currently in Soledad State Prison in Soledad , with a parole hearing held in March 2020 denying his release.
