Hans Scham

Hans Scham (* 1588 in Ottobeuren ; † August 18, 1654 in Oberstdorf ) was a South Swabian Baroque sculptor .

Life

The sculptor Hans Scham enjoyed high recognition in the southern Swabian region in the first half of the 17th century. He came from a well-known Ottobeurer family of artists. His father Kaspar, born in 1564, worked both in stone and in wood. It can be assumed that Hans Scham did an apprenticeship with his father. The artist, born in 1588, lived in Ottobeuren until 1633. When the Swedes occupied his hometown, he fled to Oberstdorf in 1633. Hans Scham died on August 18, 1654 in his new adopted home.

Services

Scham had already worked as a master at the altar for the collegiate church in Ellwangen at the age of 17 . He also made altars in the church in Eldern (1603–1611), the Wolfgang Chapel in Wangen (1613–1617), the Ochsenhausen monastery church (1620) and the church in Achstetten (1625). His best-known work in the Oberstdorf period were altars in the Hindelang parish church in 1637/38. In Rettenberg he probably designed the new high altar in 1641/42. However, as art styles changed, these altars were replaced and some of the sculptures were used in less important churches and chapels. The crucifixion group from Ochsenhausen in Hattenburg (1620/22) and the Mother of God in the parish church of St. Verena in Fischen (approx. 1641) from Scham are certain. The crescent moon Madonna in the church in Vorderhindelang and a life-size cruciform fixus in the parish church of St. Verena in Fischen also come from his workshop.
