Hans of Ulm (Herrenberg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans von Ulm or Hans Steinmetz (* around 1460 in Ulm , † 1519 in Herrenberg ) was mainly in Württemberg active master bricklayer and stonemason , who settled in Herrenberg.

Life

The correct family name of the master mason, who was referred to in the documents as "Hans von Ulm", "Hans Steinmetz" or just "Church mason", is not known. He came to Herrenberg at the latest in 1488 with his wife and a daughter. In 1488, he was commissioned by the then provost Wenzel Melweiß to complete the collegiate church . It was necessary to build the vault of the church and to make urgent repairs to the masonry that had been carried out earlier. Immediately afterwards, Hans von Ulm must have applied for citizenship in Herrenberg and received it soon. As a citizen of Herrenberg, he was allowed to settle in Herrenberg and was subject to tax there continuously from 1488 to 1518/19. Work on the collegiate church lasted until 1493. Hans' maker 's mark is on a keystone in the south aisle of the collegiate church. Hans von Ulm was a craftsman who was admired and valued in Herrenberg. In 1492 he got an additional order to build a well. Even before the work on the collegiate church was completed, he took on a larger contract in Pforzheim in 1492 . Perhaps that is why he was not involved in the work on the St. Vitus Church in Gärtringen , which was completed in 1496 and incorporated into the Herrenberg Monastery. Hans von Ulm worked again on the collegiate church when Melweiß 'successor Johannes Rebmann had the work continued in 1498. At that time, mainly the south portal and the south sacristy were built.

Hans von Ulm probably only had one daughter who married a Caspar Rumelstein from Altdorf in 1501.
