Hans Rott (historian)

Hans Adam Rott (born November 12, 1876 in Hunspach , Alsace ; † August 6, 1942 in Badenweiler ) was a German historian , above all an art historian . For many years he was director of the Badisches Landesmuseum Karlsruhe .

life and work

After attending grammar school in Weißenburg , Hans Rott first studied law at the University of Freiburg and was awarded a doctorate there in 1900 with a legal history thesis. jur. PhD. He then studied at the University of Heidelberg history, art history and church history and was there in 1904 with a thesis on Frederick II. Palatine Dr. phil. PhD. In 1906 he undertook a trip through Asia Minor to research the Christian monuments there. Since 1909, Rott was the successor of Max Wingenroth as assistant director at the Badisches Landesmuseum in Karlsruhe, where he a. a. worked for the inventory of the art monuments of Baden . From 1919 until his retirement in 1938 he was director of the state museum. For his services, he was awarded the title of professor. He was an honorary citizen of the Technical University of Karlsruhe .

He researched and published primarily in the field of art history in Baden and southwest Germany at the time of the upheaval from the late Gothic to the Renaissance , for which he mainly used archival sources .
