Léon Noël (born March 28, 1888 in Paris , † August 6, 1987 in Toucy , Yonne Department ) was a French politician , ambassador and President of the Constitutional Council .

Life

Noël was the son of Jules Noël, Councilor of State, and Cécile Burchard-Bélaváry . In 1912 he received his doctorate in law and then took up a position in the Conseil d'État . In 1927 he became the General Delegate of the French High Commissioner in the Rhineland . In 1930 he became Prefect of the Haut-Rhin department , then Minister Plenipotentiary in Prague (1932–1935), and finally Ambassador to Poland (1935–1939). He represented the French Foreign Minister in the Armistice of Compiègne on June 22, 1940. On July 9, 1940, he was appointed head of the French delegation in the occupied zone. Ten days later he resigned from this position. From 1943 he supported Charles de Gaulle .

He was a member since 1944 and from 1958 President of the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences . He was a member of de Gaulle's party Rally of the French People (RPF) from 1951 to 1955 as a deputy for the Yonne department in the French Parliament . In 1959 he was appointed Chairman of the Constitutional Council of the Fifth Republic by the President of the Republic . He held this office until 1965.
