life and work

Hansda Sowvendra Shekhar grew up in Jharkhand, where he still lives today. He works as a doctor on behalf of the government. For his first novel, The mysterious Ailment of Rupi Baskey , which is set in a Santal village , he received the Yuva Puraskar Award from the Sahitya Academy . The novel can be seen as an important milestone in the move away from an undifferentiated representation of indigenous peoples in India. His second book, The Adivasi will not Dance (in English roughly 'The native does not dance') deals again with the situation of the Santal, but it was heavily criticized because of its negative portrayal of living conditions, especially by women and girls, and was at times censored by the state of Jharkhand. In this context, Hansda Sowvendra Shekhar also temporarily lost his position in the government. Public protests against this censorship led to its lifting and withdrawal of the author's dismissal. The original criticism of the book came from Santals, it is possibly connected with a conflict over the question of which writing system Santali should be written with. Protests against the book rose shortly after Hansda Sowvendra Shekhar posted on social media about Ol Chiki , the Indian government-approved writing system for Santali. The author himself belongs to the Santal ethnic group.

Hansda Sowvendra Shekhar also works as a translator of prose and poetry from Santali and Hindi into English .
