The Hansehafen Magdeburg is the northernmost and at the same time the youngest of the four ports in the city of Magdeburg .

It is located in Magdeburg 's industrial area north on the Rothensee descent canal and is connected to the Mittelland Canal , the Magdeburg waterway intersection and the Elbe via this canal . In the port area there is a container port as part of a freight traffic center (GVZ). The port area covers a total of 40 hectares.

Construction began on October 19, 2004, the inauguration of the GVZ took place in 2006 and the final completion in 2008. The investments amounted to 34.5 million euros. In a further construction phase, a further 4.65 million euros were invested until December 2012 in order to expand several access roads and thus improve the accessibility of the port.

In addition to handling containers , around 15,000 items per year, the Hanseatic port's focus is on the loading of heavy goods , including regularly components for wind turbines . As a major manufacturer of such systems, Enercon operates a production facility in the immediate vicinity of the port. Since the site was developed, several companies have settled there, in particular from the feed production and grain processing sectors as well as the mineral oil sector .

The name of the port is reminiscent of Magdeburg's tradition as a member of the Hanseatic League .
