Hansjörg Küster

Hansjörg Küster (* 1956 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German biologist and has been Professor of Plant Ecology at the Institute for Geobotany at the Leibniz University of Hanover since 1998 . He is best known for his publications on the history of forests in Central Europe and the history of the landscape .

Hansjörg Küster studied biology at the University of Stuttgart-Hohenheim and received his doctorate in 1985.

Küster has been a professor at the University of Hanover since 1998 . His fields of work are the basics of ecology and the history of vegetation and landscape. Küster is the head of several third-party funded projects from the EU, the German Research Foundation and the Volkswagen Foundation .

In his books and essays, Küster primarily analyzes the shaping of the contemporary Central European landscape and the forest by humans and forestry. Küster has popularized his theses - for example on the wood shortage - also in media appearances and with newspaper articles. Küster has not only written books in general about the history of nature and landscape, he has also written specific things about the grain and the garden kingdom of Wörlitz. In 2020 his book Die Alpen. The story of a landscape in which he does not want to turn the Alps into a protected area, but rather emphasizes the mutual dependence of ecological economics and tourism.
