Hard Again is a studio album by American blues musician Muddy Waters , which he recorded in 1977 for Blue Sky Records.
General
The album was the first that he recorded for Blue Sky Records, a Columbia Records sub-label , and his first to be produced by Johnny Winter . After a series of mediocre albums, Hard Again is a sensational comeback and proof of the master's musical ability. The inclusion of studio talks and prompts for musicians gives the album a touch of intimacy. This and the two subsequent albums were among the artist's most commercially successful.
During the recordings Winter and Waters were supported by an excellent band. Bob Margolin and Johnny Winter played guitar, Pinetop Perkins piano and James Cotton harmonica. Of his old colleagues, Willie "Big Eyes" Smith was still there on drums during the recordings. Charles Calmese, who played in James Cotton's band, can be heard on bass.
In 1977 the album received the Grammy in the category "Best Ethnic or Traditional Recording".

Criticism
- Q (p. 134) - “For students of the post-war blues, a guaranteed delight.” (A guaranteed pleasure for students of the post-war blues.)
- Down Beat (p. 68) - "... he's playful and proud, brawny and insistent, his free-flow of inspiration spreading to his superlative road band ..." (... he's playful and proud, strong and persistent, his flowing inspiration spreads over his high-class band.)
