Lake Harku ( Estonian Harku järv ; historical German name Harkscher See ) is a lake in northern Estonia . Other names of the lake are Haabersti järv , Loodjärv and Argo järv .
Lake Harku is located west of the Estonian capital Tallinn in Harju County . It lies at a height of 0.9 m above sea level. The lake is about 3 km from the shores of the Baltic Sea . Its area is 1,635 km². The deepest part of the lake is at 2.5 m. The average depth is only 1.6 m. The catchment area covers over 50 km². Its only tributary is the Harku brook.
The lake was formed about 2000 years ago with the uplift of the land and the associated separation from the Baltic Sea . Today it is a popular destination for anglers and water sports enthusiasts .
