The first edition appeared in 1736 under the full title Fundamenta Botanica, quae Majorum Operum Prodromi instar Theoriam Scientiae Botanices per breves Aphorismos tradunt (for example: Botanical Foundations, which as a precursor to larger works provides a theory of the science of botany in short aphorisms ) by the Amsterdam bookseller Salomon Schouten.

The first edition was dedicated to Olof Rudbeck , Lorenz Heister , Adriaan van Royen , Johann Jacob Dillen , Antoine de Jussieu , Giulio Pontedera , Johann Amman , Abraham Vater , Johannes Burman , Isaac Rand , Pierre Magnol and Giuseppe Monti . A review of the work by Johann Ernst Hebenstreit appeared in Acta eruditorum in 1737 .

content

The work consists of 365 aphorisms which are in turn arranged in the following 12 chapters:

  • I. Bibliotheca (library), Aphorisms 1-52
  • II. Systemata (systematics), 53-77
  • III. Plantae (plants), 78-85
  • IV. Fructificatio (fruit carrier), 86-131
  • V. Sexus, 132-150
  • VI. Characteres (characterization), 151-209
  • VII. Nouns (names), 210-255
  • VIII. Differentiae, 256-305
  • IX. Varietates, 306-317
  • X. Synonyma (synonyms), 318-324
  • XI. Adumbrationes (description), 325-335
  • XII. Vires (Forces), 336-365

In addition to the recording of the known botanical writings and an inventory of the taxonomic systems known up to that point , it is also about the sexuality of plants, the correct description and naming of plants and the presentation of their healing powers.

For Linné, this collection of aphorisms , which was completed during his stay in Holland , is the basis of his further work. 15 years later, he summarized his newly gained knowledge in his Philosophia Botanica , a completely revised new edition of the Fundamenta Botanica .
