Harlem Skyscraper Cycling Classic-David Walker Memorial

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Harlem Skyscraper Cycling Classic-David Walker Memorial is a circuit race. It is held annually on US Father's Day in Marcus Garvey Park in New York's Harlem district . The race with several age groups in the men's and women's category was at times part of the US criterion championship series .

The race was held for the first time in 1973. The nickname David Walker Memorial goes back to a NYPD officer who started the race with the aim of getting children excited about cycling and teaching them responsibility and athleticism. After David Walker's death in 2008, his son David C. Walker continued the organization together with former professional cyclist John Eustice and his event company Sparta Cycling. At the 40th edition in 2013, Charlie Issendorf took over the organization of the race after the race had to cope with the loss of some sponsors. A year later, the organization passed into the hands of Richard Claudel Cox and his non-profit company "Unity Sports Productions".

The competitions are an important starting point for the New York cycling scene; For example, Olympic silver medalist Nelson Vails began his career as a child in one of the youth races . The race has been supported since 2009 by the video game company Rockstar Games , which ensures that not only local drivers but also professionals from Europe, primarily rail professionals such as the German Leif Lampater or the Swiss Franco Marvulli , start in their own team.
