The Harmunichs are an a cappella ensemble from Munich that has dedicated itself to the four-part barbershop style. The Harmunichs were founded in 1995 as the first barbershop choir in Munich under the name Bavarian Harmony Chorus. The winners of the German barbershop championship in 2006, 2016 and 2018 combine classic barbershop pieces with arrangements from the fields of pop and rock in their English-language repertoire. In addition to their own concerts and various engagements, the Harmunichs, with their large selection of lively English Christmas carols and some gospels, have now become an integral part of entertainment at the Munich Christmas markets and have also established themselves as a vocal ensemble for the festive background of weddings. Not least since their appearance at the Grand Prix of Choirs on ZDF 2007, the Harmunichs are also known far beyond the borders of Munich.
history
The Harmunichs were founded in 1995 as the first barbershop choir in Munich under the name Bavarian Harmony Chorus. The decisive impetus for this was provided by Kelly Graves, a committed singer from the USA who brought a lot of barbershop experience from her home country to the young choir.
After several changes in the direction of the choir, in 2001 the American Monica Knox, who had been living in Germany since 1987, took over the direction of the ensemble, which then consisted of 15 singers. Monica Knox is a trained singer and has been involved in various choirs and solo projects since her youth; With her quartet Chromagic she was able to successfully take part in the German barbershop championships several times. Under their musical direction, the Harmunichs have grown steadily and celebrated their greatest success in March 2006 when they competed in the German barbershop association BinG! Winner of the German championships in Dortmund. With the move to a larger rehearsal room, the number of members has now increased to over 40 singers.
Since 2001 the Harmunichs have been a registered association and a member of the Bavarian Singers' Association as well as the German barbershop umbrella organization BinG! . In addition to her commitment to BinG! , the Harmunichs have been actively involved in establishing a German region of the global barbershop association for women Sweet Adelines International since 2008 .
repertoire
The Harmunichs have dedicated themselves to the four-part a cappella singing style of barbershop. This style dates back to social gatherings in US hair salons in the late 19th century. There the waiting gentlemen passed the time with spontaneous, improvised singing. Barbershop is characterized by tight harmony sets that enable the creation of overtones and undertones. In addition to classic barbershop arrangements - such as The Moment I Saw Your Eyes or Sweet Georgia Brown , which also reveal their American origins through their proximity to jazz music, the Harmunichs also perform evergreens such as Hello, Mary Lou and well-known pop songs such as Happy Together or Under the Boardwalk in their repertoire.
