Harpoon is a realistic air and marine simulation based on Larry Bond 's tabletop of the same name. The player can choose one of the two sides (blue or red). In a simulated naval battle, both local conflicts and situations from the Cold War are simulated. The missions range from small speed boat battles to large oceanic battles involving many ships and hundreds of planes. The game's database contains hundreds of real ships, aircraft and land facilities (airfields, ports, etc.). There are also databases from other providers that deal with special topics. A scenario editor is also part of the game. As a result, there are hundreds of additional scenarios on the internet.

The player must lead his associations in a coordinated manner with numerous ships and aircraft from other locations. The simulation takes place on a map and can be accelerated with an adjustable time cycle. The player has to decide for himself about the armament and the fuel load.

Harpoon is such a comprehensive marine simulation that its pro version is used for training naval officers.

In the meantime, the rights to the Harpoon series have passed into the possession of Advanced Gaming Systems Inc. The last available version (as of July 2020) is a Harpoon - Ultimate Edition , which contains all versions of Harpoon 1, 2 and 3.

An unofficial successor was the British company WarfareSims Ltd. and published in 2013 as Command: Modern Air / Naval Operations . In 2019, the modernized successor Command: Modern Operations came onto the market.

Tom Clancy used the Harpoon rules for his novels Hunt for Red October and In the Storm to check the tactics and combat operations described in the books for plausibility.
