Harrisia hurstii is a species of plant in the genus Harrisia fromthe cactus family (Cactaceae). The specific epithet hurstii honors HE Hurst from Puerto Plata who discovered the species.
description
Harrisia hurstii grows tree-shaped with several upright greyish green shoots and a distinct trunk. There are ten to twelve low and rounded ribs , separated by shallow, irregular furrows. The four cross central spines are yellowish, have a darker tip and are 5 to 8 centimeters long. The top of them is ascending. The nine yellowish, needle-like radial spines are spread out.
The flowers reach a length of up to 20 centimeters. The lemon-yellow, egg-shaped fruits are humped. They have a diameter of 2.5 centimeters and a length of up to 5 centimeters.
Distribution and systematics
Harrisia hurstii is common in the Dominican Republic .
It was first described in 1941 by William Taylor Marshall .
