Harry Tilman ( 1960 in Duisburg - 1994 in Düsseldorf ) was a German painter who lived and worked in Düsseldorf during his main career. He studied from 1979 to 1987 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Gerhard Richter and in 1987 was awarded the Peter Mertes scholarship of the Bonner Kunstverein .

life and work

Harry Tilman studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1979 to 1987, where he was appointed Gerhard Richter's master class student in 1987. During this time he was in close contact with fellow students in painting and sculpture, such as Jürgen Drescher , Wilhelm Mundt , Thomas Schütte , Reinhard Niedermeier and Karl Böhmer as well as artists from the Düsseldorf School of Photography . In this context he was photographed by fellow student Thomas Ruff for his well-known photo series Portraits .

In his main creative period (1985–1994) he dealt in depth with the art movements of minimalism and conceptual art , which is reflected in his work in particular in the fascination for surfaces and form, monochrome color intensity and depth of light.

Sculpture, play with light and form, photography and literary reflection as well as intensive material and color studies laid the basis for his often large-format works. This scientific and intellectual work process lifts his works out of the purely private sphere of artistic creation and embeds them in the public discussion and cultural reflection of the 1980s.
