Wilhelm Mundt
Wilhelm Mundt (* 1959 in Grevenbroich ) is a German sculptor who lives and works in Düsseldorf . Together with the painter Michael Jäger , who was almost the same age , he temporarily had his own exhibition space in the Kunstmuseum Bonn .
Mundt studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1979 to 1986 with Tony Cragg , Klaus Rinke and Irmin Kamp . In 1986 he received a grant from the Kunstfonds Foundation , Bonn, and from 1989 to 1991 he taught at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. In 2009 he took up a professorship at the Dresden University of Fine Arts .
Mundt achieved national fame with his group of works “trashstones”, which has been produced since 1989. Trashstones are production waste that the artist lavishly coated with synthetic resin and that look like boulders to the viewer . The collection of several hundred numbered individual objects contains the largest piece of Trashstone 412 weighing around a ton . In addition to his sculptural work, there are also drawings, photos and films that put the “trashstones” in a different context, as a preliminary stage, so to speak. The Royal Academy of Arts , London honored Mundt's work with the Jack Goldhill Award for Sculpture in 2007 .
