Hartwig (Bamberg)

Hartwig († after January 2, 1053 ) was German Chancellor and Bishop of Bamberg.

Its origin is not documented, but it can be assumed that it belonged to the dynasty of the Counts of Bogen . In 1047 he, the Chancellor of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation , was appointed Bishop of Bamberg. In October 1052 Pope Leo IX visited. Bamberg and probably also brought the remains of Pope Clement II , who had ordered to be buried in his diocese. On January 2, 1053, Hartwig was the first bishop of Bamberg to receive the pallium from Pope Leo IX. with permission to wear this on the following three days: Ascension Day , the feast of the princes of the apostles Peter and Paul and the day of St. Dionysius , the anniversary of Pope Clement II's death. In 1053, he laid the foundation stone for Weißenohe Monastery , and the third bishop of the Bamberg diocese died in the same year.
