Hasencleverhaus

The Hasencleverhaus at Mühlenstrasse 11 in Arnsberg dates from the early 19th century. It is the birthplace of the social democratic politician Wilhelm Hasenclever .

history

The house is located in the Arnsberg mill district outside the city walls , where mills have been located since the Middle Ages. The hydropower of the Arnsberger Mühlengraben is still used by a hydropower plant directly adjacent to the house at Mühlenstrasse 11.

Johann Christoph Hasenclever , a tanner from Halver , married Helene vom Dahle in 1823. The couple then moved from the Märkisches Sauerland to Arnsberg. The family bought a piece of land from a miller who had operated a pearl barley mill there and had a house built there. The building was also a commercial enterprise as a Lohmühle. The exact time of construction cannot be determined, it was between 1823 and 1828. In 1828 it appeared in the “Characteristic of the residential buildings in the city of Arnsberg.” The house then had twelve rooms. Four of them could be heated. Wilhelm Hasenclever, one of the leading figures of early social democracy, was born in this house. With his father, he also completed an apprenticeship as a tanner. His older brother Karl Hasenclever took over the house and business in 1857. He converted the business into a grinding mill. In the first half of the 20th century, the building was used by the Sauerland paper mill and served as a residential building. After that it was owned by different owners and has been used exclusively as a residential building ever since.

Building description

The house is a plastered half-timbered house . The front of the core building has a five-axis structure with a central entrance and a longitudinal corridor behind it. Also with its hipped roof in the gable trapezoid, it is a typical building for the classicist construction of the first third of the 19th century. A few extensions were added later.

In the assessment of the Westphalian Office for the Preservation of Monuments from 1988, it is said that “due to the good state of preservation, it is an important testimony to the way of building and living in the first half of the 19th century” .

The house was listed as a historical monument in 1988. The then owner took legal action against this and in 1992 the monument protection was lifted under the condition that it was preserved. It is currently registered under number 252 in the register of cultural assets of the city of Arnsberg to be protected .
