Hassisen kone (Eng. Hassinens machine ) was a Finnish rock band from Joensuu , North Karelia , which was founded in late 1979. At the beginning the group played a new wave of Finnish punk, but towards the end of its existence it developed a mix of different styles. The band was active until 1982.

history

Foundation, first successes and reputation (1979–1980)

Hassisen kone was founded in December 1979, the band was named after a sewing machine company in his hometown of Joensuu . The manager at the time, who was very religious, was angry that the band was using his company's name. In response to the protest, the band changed their name to Kassisen Kone, (German: Kassinen's machine ). Later, when the band rose to fame, the company changed its name to Joensuun Konepalvelu ( Eng . Machine Service Joensuu ). The original name became free for the band.

The band took part in the Rock SM Cup (Finnish championship in rock music) in Oulu in 1980 and won the New Wave competition. In the spring of the same year, the sales success of their records began with the release of the first single Hassisen kone / Kolumpia orkesteri (German Hassinen's machine / Kolumpia orchestra ). This single was released by the Hilse record label . Further publications of the band appeared on Poko-Rekords . The original band members were Ismo Alanko, Reijo Heiskanen, Jussi Kinnunen and Harri Kinnunen.

The first album, Täältä tullaan Venäjä ( Ger . Here we come, Russia ), was released in 1980. It contained the successful track Rappiolla ( Ger . Neglect ) and previously released songs like "Hassisen kone".

Ugly Melodies and New Members (1981)

With the second album Rumia säveliä ( Ger . Ugly Melodies ) (1981) Hassisen kone switched to a complex musical style. This style shaped hits like Jurot nuorisojulkkikset (German: stiff youth celebrities ) and Tällä tiellä (German: on this path ). The songs in the second album dealt with themes such as the torment of existence and apocalyptic visions, which determined the dark mood of the album. The album received better ratings than the debut album, and the record was voted Domestic Record of the Year in the popular music category by music journalists for the Finnish Public Broadcasting Corporation. In 2005 the Finnish music magazine Soundi declared the record the fourth best in the Finnish popular music category.

In the summers of 1981 and 1982 the band took part in the rock happening Tuuliajolla , a kind of cruise in which bands sail from one concert to the next on a ship in the Saimaa lake area. In the same year the band also appeared in the documentary Saimaa-ilmiö ( Eng . The Saimaa Phenomenon ). This film was directed by the brothers Mika and Aki Kaurismäki . At the end of 1981 Hassisenkone even got four new members. At that time, Eero "Safka" Pekkonen, Antti Seppo, Hannu Porkka and Jukka Orma joined the band.

Last album and end of the band (1982)

Harsoinen teräs ( Eng . Schierer Stahl ), the band's third and final studio album, was released in 1982. The album was full of progressive elements, which can be clearly heard, for example, in the most famous song on the album, Levottomat jalat ( Eng : restless feet ). Hassisen kone officially broke up in 1981 because the members were tired of only playing the most popular songs from the first album. However, the band completed the tour that was then ongoing.

After Hassisen kone (since 1983)

Shortly after the breakup, Ismo Alanko and Jukka Orma founded a new band called Sielun veljet (German soul brothers ). Jussi Kinnunen took a six-month break from music after which he played in various bands, e. B. in Ismo Alanko Säätiö . Hannu Porkka currently plays percussions in the Philharmonic Orchestra of the City of Joensuu. Harri Kinnunen has worked for Sleepy Sleepers and Lapinlahden Linnut , Eero Pekkonen z. B. played for Popeda .

The band has played many nostalgic concerts since they broke up. In 2000 she performed again at a midsummer concert in Joensuu, Eastern Finland . This concert was recorded and released on DVD titled 20 vuotta myöhemmin ( 20 years later ). All of Hassisenkone's albums are now considered Finnish rock classics, as are many of the band's songs, e.g. B. Levottomat jalat , Rappiolla , Harsoinen teräs , Tällä tiellä and Rajat .
