Hattons

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hattons were a family of the Frankish nobility who held important positions of power in the Franconian Empire in the first half of the 9th century, i.e. under the emperors Charlemagne and Louis the Pious . As loyal followers of the emperors, including Lothar I , they were promoted and given goods and rights from the imperial property. They were used as governors and royal messengers ( missus ) in Bavaria and Saxony, but after the death of Ludwig the Pious they were deposed because of their loyalty to the emperor (and the idea of imperial unity): One of the first acts of Ludwig the German after the death of his father was to drive the Hattons out of Saxony and give their property to the Corvey monastery (December 14, 840). The end of Hattonic power came at the latest with the Battle of the Wörnitz on May 13, 841, in which the allies of Lothar Ludwig the German were defeated.
