Philippe Depreux

Philippe Depreux (born March 28, 1967 in Roubaix ) is a French medieval historian .

Philippe Depreux received his doctorate in 1994 under Olivier Guillot at the University of Paris IV with a prosopographical study on the time of Louis the Pious . The main part of the work consists of 280 articles on ecclesiastical and secular persons, which can be found in the sources around Ludwig. With this investigation Depreux did an important preparatory work for the future edition of the documents of Ludwig the Pious.

After working at the University of Lille III (Attaché temporaire d'enseignement et de recherche) from 1996 to 1998 , Depreux was a lecturer in medieval history (Maître de conférences d'Histoire medievale) at the University of Tours from 1998 to 2003 . From 2003 to 2006 he was a scientist at the French Historical Research Center ( Mission Historique Française en Allemagne ) in Göttingen. 2005, his Habilitation took place at the University of Paris I . From 2006 to 2013 he taught as professor for the history of the Middle Ages at the Université de Limoges . From 2007 to 2012 he was a member of the Institut universitaire de France . In 2013 he accepted an offer at the University of Hamburg for a W3 professorship for Medieval History and thus succeeded Hans-Werner Goetz in the 2013/14 winter semester . Since the 2015/16 winter semester he has been the supervisor of the Franco-German course "HamBord", an integrated Franco-German bachelor's degree offered by the University of Hamburg and the Université Bordeaux Montaigne . Depreux is a member of the Medievalist Association (since 2004) and the Association of Historians (since 2014).

Depreux is considered to be one of the leading Carolingian experts. The focus is on social and constitutional history. He works for the Monumenta Germaniae Historica together with Stefan Esders , Steffen Patzold and Karl Ubl on the new edition of the Carolingian capitularies after 814. The “Regesta Regni Aquitaniae. The regests of the Kingdom of Aquitaine under Pippin I and Pippin II. / Les régestes du royaume d'Aquitaine sous Pépin Ier et Pépin II ”are under the direction of Depreux and in cooperation with the“ German Commission for the Processing of the Regesta Imperii e. V. ”and the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature . In March 2010, Depreux and Irmgard Fees organized an international conference in Limoges on the subject of “L'acte d'échange, du VIIe au XIIe siècle - barter and barter from the 8th to the 12th century”. The articles were published in 2013. Together with Patzold he held the international conference “Politics and Assembly in the Early Middle Ages” in Aachen in September 2014. In October 2016, the long-term project "Formulas - Litterae - Chartae" with a total funding volume of 4.4 million euros was approved by the Joint Science Conference. The aim is the processing and critical edition of early medieval sample certificates and letters as well as research into formulaic writing in the Latin early and high Middle Ages. On January 12, 2017, the humanities project of the Academy of Sciences in Hamburg , which was scheduled to run until December 31, 2031, began its work under the direction of Depreux.
