Main library of the University of Zurich

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The main library of the University of Zurich (HBZ) is a public university library for natural sciences, medicine and MTT professions. It comprises three locations.

The main library of the University of Zurich is not to be confused with the Zurich Central Library , which is also a university library .

Tasks and organization

HBZ - learning center
HBZ - Medicine Careum
HBZ - Natural Sciences

The HBZ has a dual mandate: on the one hand, as the central information exchange on the Irchel Campus and on the Careum Campus , it supplies the members of the university, the University Hospital and the Careum Education Center with media. As the main library of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and the Faculty of Medicine, it maintains scientific and medical stocks. On the other hand, the HBZ coordinates the electronic information resources of all subject areas that are available in the university network and the corresponding research systems, databases and electronic journals and publications (ZORA). The library catalog "IDS Zurich UZH", which was managed as an IDS sub-network until 2013, is now part of the library catalog of the NEBIS library network .

The HBZ comprises three locations: HBZ - learning center, HBZ - natural sciences and HBZ - medicine Careum. The university-wide tasks are overseen by three HBZ departments: as the coordination point for information technology when using e-resources at the UZH and for the information network of the University of Zurich, the IT / library cooperation department, the central management of e-media including magazines at the UZH through the E-Media department and the implementation of the UZH's Open Access strategy through the Open Access department.

The services are coordinated with the Zurich Central Library and the ETH Library in Zurich as well as with the other Swiss university libraries. The main library belongs to the Academic Services department of the University of Zurich, which is headed by the Vice-Rector for Law and Economics. A library commission is responsible for the strategic orientation of the main library and the library system at the University of Zurich, the library coordination acts as an exchange and information platform and deals with the requirements and needs of users. In 2014 she joined the Cooperative Storage Library Switzerland .

Electronic information resources

The libraries at the University of Zurich have set themselves the strategic goal of actively, customer-oriented, sustainable and efficient support for research and learning environments with digital information and information systems. The e-library strategy formulates the framework for implementation. The core elements of the e-library are the electronic information resources, the publication and research data, the research tools and the user-centered offers. The coordinated acquisition and licensing of the electronic information resources of all subject areas that are available on the university network, the consolidation of distributed resources in the research portal and the context-sensitive linking of these resources are one of the main tasks of the HBZ. With its coordination of e-media, the HBZ is responsible for the adequate and efficient use of central financial resources and resources through cost-effective procurement and cooperative purchasing groups such as the consortium of Swiss university libraries.

Publication and research data

Scientists and research organizations are increasingly placing their publications on the Internet in openly accessible archives and document servers. The principle of open access is a necessary strategy for efficient scientific communication. The University of Zurich supports Open Access and has made this a strategic goal with corresponding guidelines. It is the declared goal of UZH to further strengthen awareness of Open Access within the university and to align and network the ZORA document and publication server, the Zurich Open Repository and Archive, internationally. This is how the University of Zurich presents its research output in the best possible way. The HBZ coordinates Open Access at the UZH.

Research tools

The former network catalog IDS Zurich University was integrated into the catalog of the NEBIS network in April 2013, and can be queried via the UZH / ZBZ research portal. The printed and electronic holdings of over a hundred libraries are listed. The UZH sub-areas are looked after by the IT / Libraries Department of the main library in cooperation with the IT services of the University of Zurich. Access management for the UZH database research portal with the link resolver SFX and for the electronic journal library EZB is handled by the HBZ's E-Media department.

User-centered offers

The provision of electronic information resources does not guarantee optimal use. Information literacy, which enables information to be systematically researched, evaluated and used effectively, is required as a key qualification. Information literacy must be acquired or taught. Supporting students and researchers in acquiring this methodological competence is a core task of libraries. The quality of the courses is promoted by setting common standards and learning objectives for courses and through cooperation between the university libraries.

The HBZ has taken the lead in the E-lib.ch sub-project Information Skills at Swiss Universities (2009–2011). It itself offers a training program for members of the university, with an emphasis on the medical faculty, the mathematics and natural sciences faculty as well as for doctors and students in the health professions. The emphasis is on the curricular courses, if possible with credit points.
